Gena
Graves, at CHA since 1993
I began
with Passage House when it first opened its doors in October 1993.
I loved this opportunity because it combined two of my favorite
roles in life, being a professional and being a parent.
When
I started at Passage House I was raising two young children. For
this reason I was motivated to help others in their endeavor to
do the same. Working with teenage girls was especially appealing
to me because I saw how important it was for them to learn how
to make better choices and, in the process, hopefully become better
working moms.
I have
been at Covenant House Alaska for over 9 years, and in that time
I have learned so much from working with the girls at Passage
House. I have learned patience, determination, endurance and humility.
I continue at Passage House because I feel that I still have something
to offer the girls in the program and because I believe in the
mission and philosophy of care at Covenant House.
It’s
wonderful to be part of something as purposeful, meaningful and
valuable as Passage House is in our community.
Jennifer
first came to Covenant House when she left home at the age of
18. Pregnant and alone, she initially stayed at the Crisis Center.
Jennifer later moved to Passage House, where she continued to
stay after the birth of her son, Deven.
While
at Passage House, Jennifer has learned many important skills for
both living independently and being a mom to Deven. “I tell
other girls to take in all of the information they [staff members]
give because it is all very helpful, and they will use it in their
work environment and their homes. I've really appreciated all
of the help they have given me, and so does Deven.”
Her experience
with the Job Development Program has been particularly helpful.
She says that they taught her about more than finding a job. “I
also learned tips on how to keep a job, such as being on time,
[my] attitude at work, and working well with others.” Jennifer
has worked as a front-desk attendant at the Alaska Club, an Anchorage-based
athletic facility, for more than four months. She hopes to re-enter
the military next spring and has plans to pursue a career in nursing.
