In 2021, Covenant House Alaska received a significant investment from Alaska tribal partners who wanted to optimize federal CARES Act funds to get young Alaskans back to work.  Along with other community investors, Covenant House raised $16 million to construct two new buildings Covey Lofts and Covey Academy.

Covey Lofts adds 22 micro-unit apartments attached to the Youth Engagement Center (YEC) and allows a young person age 18-24 to move seamlessly from shelter to apartment living.  Covey Academy offers education and vocational training opportunities that create pathways to employment and has 19 workforce micro-units reserved for program participants age 18-24.

These two new programs create youth housing and employment opportunities and empower hundreds of vulnerable young people each year to overcome diversity and become thriving members of our community.

In October of 2023, Covenant House Alaska kicked off the $4 million Start Up Fund to ensure the successful launch and continuous innovation of these groundbreaking programs.  These programs are pivotal steps in our youth's journey to success.  Over the next two years, the Start Up Fund will:

  • Provide tailored, credentialed training programs for disadvantaged Alaskans.
  • Supply books, supplies and tools for student success
  • Cover room and board at Covey Academy during training programs
  • Offer housing at Covey Lofts as young people transition from shelter to supported independence.
  • Secure flexible funding to help Covenant House Alaska measure program effectiveness today in order to secure sustainable funding for the future.

“Innovation comes when you have the time, space and mental capacity to look at your organization and think, ‘how can we be different?’ Because of the support from our community, we have been able to ask that question instead of, ‘how do we keep the lights on?’

Now, we find ourselves standing on a metaphorical bridge that we built together – ready to watch some of the most incredible transformations to ever happen. Not only to individuals, but to our Alaska community as a whole. It’s exciting and I’m humbled to share this moment in history with everyone who has believed in us.” - Alison Kear
